On May 14, a FOIA request revealed that the DOJ secretly subpoenaed a Guardian journalist’s phone records as part of a leak investigation, initiated by President Trump. The subpoena was issued early in the Biden Administration in February of 2021. The DOJ sought phone records and went directly to the journalist’s phone provider to get them. Just a few months after this subpoena, the DOJ changed their policy on using compulsory processes to obtain information from journalists. Congress should pass the PRESS Act to protect confidential sources and a free and independent press. Read more.
