On September 13, the News/Media Alliance joined the Reporters Committee’s amicus letter to the General Counsel of the Department of Defense advocating for access to court records that were improperly sealed. In US v. Mays, Seaman Apprentice Ryan Mays is accused of starting a fire that destroyed the USS Bonhomme. A military judge denied the public access to the record, citing a law that was designed to create more disclosures in military tribunals. The letter explains that “[d]enying access to these records frustrates journalists’ ability to report on this case, hampering the public’s ability to understand the proceedings and assess…whether justice is served here.” The Alliance continues to advocate for open court records in military cases to allow the public access to critical information.
