Current Issue:

June 2023 – This month, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about one particular essay about the “creator economy.” To those of us working in “old media,” the idea of a single person, armed with a brain, a laptop, and the ability to distribute to the whole internet has long been positioned as “the future.” But in this insightful piece, Renée DiResta examines how the conditions of our current era – technological and reader attention-based – have led so many individual creators to become what DiResta calls “propagandists.” The piece is worth reading for anyone who believes in the value of fact-based news, and also the business model that supports it. President and CEO of the News Media Alliance, David Chavern, and CEO of America’s Newspapers, Dean Ridings, which represent thousands of local news publishers across the United States, today sent a letter to President Donald Trump, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker of the House Nanci Pelosi, outlining the struggles of local news publishers, which are facing an existential crisis of their own as the COVID-19 health crisis evolves. In particular, the rapid contraction of advertising markets is dealing a brutal blow to an industry where business models were already deeply difficult.

While many publishers have seen increases in online traffic and digital subscriptions, the additional revenue has in no way made-up for the sharp losses in ad revenue. The News Media Alliance has often made the case that the online environment, generally, does not adequately reward the production and distribution of quality journalism. While that is bad in every circumstance, in the current environment it could prove fatal – both to publishers and the public.

The News Media Alliance on Thursday sent a letter to U.S. Census Bureau Director Dr. Steven Dillingham, in light of his March 18 announcement that Census field operations would be temporarily suspended due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, encouraging him to advertise for the online completion of the 2020 Census. The letter specifically encouraged the Director to employ print and digital newspaper media, which reach millions of Americans every week, in this awareness effort.

The Alliance commended Director Dillingham for taking decisive action to protect the health and safety of his employees and the American public at large. In addition, the Alliance recognizes that getting the word out about the online response option is now more important than ever, and that news publishers can play a vital role in assisting this effort.

Newspapers reach millions of readers each week and as such, the Census Bureau could reach a considerable section of the population by increasing its footprint on news publisher websites and in print newspapers.

The letter states, “We believe that dedicating more funds to these vital media channels during this time of uncertainty when the public is staying at home and consuming more information would be beneficial for the accuracy of the Census in addition to supporting local institutions that the public relies on. In addition to reallocating any potential advertising contingency funds you may have, it may also be appropriate to request more funding for Census advertising purposes from Congress as it considers measures to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the society.”

Earlier this year, the News Media Alliance launched the Advertising Intelligence Center (AIC), an in-depth database of case studies provided by our members that highlight their successful advertising campaigns. The AIC allows our members to learn and be inspired from each other’s success and creativity.

The Alliance is always on the lookout for new case studies to highlight and share with members in the AIC. A steady flow of case studies from our members ensures the AIC can continue to highlight the value of creative, targeted advertising campaigns for advertisers and news consumers.

A requirement for inclusion of a case study in the database is that it must include actual results — whether that is in the form of engagement rates with the campaign tactics or actual revenue generated by the advertisers — so that publishers who use them for inspiration can also compare the success of their ideas.

Cases in the database cover six major advertising industries:

  • Home Improvement
  • Healthcare
  • Arts/Entertainment/Tourism
  • Food/Beverage
  • Education
  • Automotive

One-third of the cases focus on campaigns targeted at a single market.

Some examples of big wins from news publisher campaigns included in the AIC:

  • $1.25 million in revenue for a regional theater client, attributed to a print and digital campaign
  • More than 100,000 entries to a sweepstakes via a nationwide campaign
  • $2 million in annual revenue (out of a total of $14 million) for a luxury furniture store client, generated by a year-long campaign
  • 100 percent increase in sales for an auto dealer client, driven by a print and digital integrated solution

We hope that the AIC will serve as a valuable resource to our members’ advertising and sales teams to help inform successful news advertising campaigns moving forward.

Check out the AIC and see how it can inspire your work for your advertising customers.

If you have questions about how best to present your organization’s success in a case study, please contact rebecca@newsmediaalliance.org.
