Public Policy

The News/Media Alliance diligently advocates on the pressing issues affecting today’s news media organizations, including monetization by the tech platforms, technology policy and advancements, postal rates, journalist protection and free press issues, and other important issues that matter most to you. As the media landscape becomes increasingly digital, it is critical that publishers find ways to monetize digital content and be fairly compensated for use of their digital content, including in search engines and for advertising sold against that content. The Alliance strongly supports legislation that would allow news publishers to collectively negotiate with the platforms for this purpose.

JCPA Resource Center: Your place for resources and the latest information on our efforts to pass the Journalism Competition & Preservation Act (JCPA) (H.R. 1735 and S. 673), a bipartisan bill that would allow news publishers to collectively negotiate with the tech platforms for fair compensation for use of their content. Resources found here include fact sheets, talking points, grassroots campaigns, our Change.org petition, our Google copyright White Paper, press releases and statements, lists of key supporters, news articles and editorials, survey research, print and digital ads, videos, and more. Visit www.JCPABill.com.

Policy Updates: A rolling update of the latest news and developments on the issues listed above that the Alliance is tracking and is engaged in activities on behalf of our members. Bookmark this page and check back regularly.

Platform News You Can Use: The News/Media Alliance sends regular updates to members on the latest developments with the major tech platforms on their work with news publishers and initiatives undertaken to highlight local news and quality journalism. You’ll find news on all the platforms and their new and ongoing projects in the Platform News You Can Use newsletter. Access the issue archive and subscribe here.

Postal Resources and Events: Through a partnership with the National Newspaper Association Foundation (NNAF), News/Media Alliance members enjoy free access to an online portal containing exclusive postal-related resources, events and materials. Materials found on the site include regular articles and updates on relevant postal issues and related regulatory affairs; postal education and training via the Max Heath Postal Institute TM; a Postal Hotline that provides consulting services; free registration to postal webinars and events; and more. The AIC contains new ideas and approaches, with accounts of strategies that really work, including case studies from fellow Alliance members — such as Hearst, GateHouse Media and AH Belo — that showcase these ideas and strategies and provide valuable insights and in-depth context on how they executed them successfully.

Browse all of the case studies or apply filters to see the cases sorted by challenge, geography or retail sector. Results are displayed in real-time. Simply click on the links to download the PDFs of the studies.

We are also accepting new case studies and encourage you to submit your success stories to us for inclusion in the AIC! Access the AIC here – member login required.

News Impact Project:

We recently introduced a new Alliance program called the News Impact Project to help demonstrate the positive impact local news has on communities. We’re in the process of assembling an encyclopedia of impactful stories that will provide compelling evidence of the critical work newsrooms and journalists are doing to drive support for local news in the form of subscriptions, donations and shares with others who will do the same.

We would love to hear about the stories you have recently produced that have been the most valuable, in terms of having a positive impact on the community. It doesn’t have to have won a Pulitzer – it just has to have had a positive impact on the community! Read more about the News Impact Project and then send us your stories to ensure your journalism is included in the encyclopedia!

News Advertising Panorama:

A fact-packed resource that is very useful for all news industry pros, the News Advertising Panorama should definitely be added to your bookmarks, especially if you work in sales, marketing or advertising. The News Advertising Panorama: A Wide-Ranging Look at the Value of the News Audience is a comprehensive resource that highlights the benefits and advantages of advertising in print and digital news media.

The 86-page Panorama includes research and statistics from a wide range of sources, including Nielsen Scarborough, comScore, Kantar Media, the Alliance’s own research and more, to demonstrate the value of the news audience for advertisers. The Panorama elaborates on eight qualities that embody the unique selling proposition for advertising in news media, and details how news media provide the best advertising strategies and channels to reach the desired audience(s).

The guide looks at key demographics of the news media audience, such as income and education, as well as their buying and spending habits and their role as influencers in society.

Keep it handy as a quick-reference resource, or to inform your next sales call or meeting with a customer. Click here to access the Panorama – member login required.

Safe Harbor Resource Center:

The Safe Harbor Resource Center is a unique and wide-ranging repository of resources and information on the Journalism Competition & Preservation Act which, if implemented, would provide an antitrust safe harbor for news publishers to collectively negotiate with the tech platforms for better business arrangements.

The News Media Alliance has been very vocal in advocating for such legislation, which it believes is needed to address the imbalance in the news publisher-platform relationship.

Visit this page to access resources and materials related to the legislation, including the Senate and House bills and related fact sheets, grassroots campaign and Alliance press statements, videos, research and more.

Digital Advocacy Rolling Update:

This page is updated regularly with the Alliance’s activities on the Hill, as well as other updates on digital issues and activities. Updates can be viewed by month and by year. Event brings together news publishers, advertisers/agencies in one place

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Arlington, VA – The News Media Alliance will host its next adXchange event on February 24 and 25 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, FL. A signature Alliance event, adXchange offers a cost-and-time-saving opportunity for its news publisher members to have private one-on-one meetings with advertisers and agencies.

adXchange is a popular event with Alliance members typically including representatives from news publishers, advertisers and ad agencies.

The event is typically held semi-annually, first in late February or early March in varying U.S. locations, and again in the fall in Chicago. This event is unique in that the agenda is focused on face-to-face meetings between publishers and advertisers/agencies.

Meeting space is provided for each advertiser, and the advertisers and news publishers schedule their own meetings. Upon registration, attendees will receive a link to their own webpage where they can access the advertiser contact list. Advertisers will also receive a link to their own webpage where they may download the news media attendee list. News publisher attendees and advertisers/agencies can mutually reach out to each other via email to set up private meetings. As the meeting hosts, advertisers/agencies are responsible for filling up their meeting slots. The Alliance can help to connect people if they are having trouble getting responses, but does not pair up publishers and advertisers/agencies or set meeting schedules.

“We have received very positive feedback from our members about adXchange over the years. It is a truly unique event that encourages the formation of new advertiser/publisher relationships, as well as maintaining existing partnerships, both of which provide great value to all parties involved,” stated Alliance President & CEO David Chavern.

Alliance Vice President, Research & Insights, Rebecca Frank stated, “Newspaper media are among the most trusted forms of media by consumers. Likewise, the news audience is more likely to engage with and take action because of advertising in the newspaper, which makes them a valuable audience for advertisers.”

A 2018 news publisher attendee said about adXchange, “This event, along with the Chicago fall event, are of extremely high value to me. Nowhere else can I see up to 25 important advertisers and agencies in such a short period of time at such a low cost.”

Jason Armstrong, Director of Media Development at Mediaspace, a full-service print and digital media buying and planning agency said, “adXchange is essential for Mediaspace in sustaining personal relationships and understanding the ever-evolving opportunities available to our clients.”

Alliance members as well as advertisers/agencies that host meetings receive complimentary registration to adXchange. For a per-person fee, non-Alliance-member news publishers may also attend. The non-member early bird rate of $300/attendee expires on December 20, 2019.

For more information and to register, visit www.newsmediaalliance.org/adXchange.
