Arlington, VA – The News/Media Alliance applauds Alliance member Axel Springer and OpenAI’s global partnership to strengthen independent journalism in the age of artificial intelligence (AI).  Alliance President & CEO Danielle Coffey stated, “These business arrangements are a good start in setting benchmarks for payment, demonstrating precedent of value.”

Reports indicate meaningful monetary value is at stake and a willingness to limit license on display that comes with attribution commitments.

Coffey continued, “We represent the industry and are working on an option available to all publishers in a way that makes sense and provides equity and fairness. OpenAI is doing the right thing to ensure technology and quality journalism exist and thrive in harmony. Our members are exploring all options, and we are ensuring no one is left behind.”

Arlington, VA – The News/Media Alliance welcomed 16 new member organizations in 2023, including large and small news, magazine, and digital media organizations from across the country and around the world, bringing the membership total to over 2,200 member organizations.

The News/Media Alliance, which merged with MPA – The Association of Magazine Media in July 2022 – works with its members to advance news and magazine industry priorities through advocacy, critical research, resources and events that demonstrate the value and importance of supporting and preserving a free and independent press.

“We are delighted to welcome these 16 news, magazine, and digital media organizations to the Alliance family, and we are grateful for their support and their recognition of the need to share a voice on important issues facing the industry,” stated News/Media Alliance President & CEO Danielle Coffey. “The support of these innovative, multimedia businesses are invaluable as we continue to advocate on behalf of the industry and fight for the future of journalistic and creative content.”

The need to support and sustain quality journalism has reached a new level of urgency this year, as the rapid adoption of generative AI has introduced yet another threat to publishers of original content. The Alliance published a White Paper in October that found AI companies significantly overweight publisher content in their crawling of the web – often while not paying the publishers who invested in producing that content – to train their generative AI systems, coming in direct competition with publishers, as well as infringing on publishers’ copyrights.

The Alliance continues to push for legislation to require Big Tech platforms such as Meta and Google to pay publishers for the use of their content, with the Journalism Competition & Preservation Act (JCPA) being reintroduced in the Senate earlier this year. Canada recently passed similar legislation, which is modeled after the law in Australia that has been extremely successful, and the California State Assembly introduced a state journalism compensation bill that was the subject of a Senate informational hearing last week.

In addition, the News/Media Alliance works on behalf of its members to advocate on press freedom/First Amendment issues, privacy, digital advertising, copyright, postal delivery and more.

New News/Media Alliance members in 2023 include (not a complete list):

  • AlterNet
  • American Craft Council
  • California Broker Magazine
  • The Economist
  • Future PLC
  • G/O Media Inc.
  • Grandstand Publishing LLC
  • The Guardian
  • Hughes Media Corp.
  • Raptive
  • Raw Story
  • Rookie Road
  • Style Media Group Inc.
  • Today Media Inc.
  • Ziff Davis

Coffey continued, “We look forward to working with our new members and all of membership to move forward key legislative and policy initiatives and demonstrate the importance and need for high-quality content in an information-driven world.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Danielle Coffey

Arlington, VA – The News/Media Alliance, a nonprofit trade association representing approximately 2,000 print and digital news and magazine media companies in the United States and Canada, today announced it has selected Danielle Coffey as its new President & Chief Executive Officer. Coffey, who currently serves as the Alliance’s Executive Vice President and General Counsel, will begin in her new role on June 1, 2023.

Since joining the Alliance in 2015, Coffey has led the organization’s advocacy and strategy initiatives with a focus on the digital future for news, including spearheading the introduction of key legislation and advocating for a more favorable regulatory environment. Namely, she has led the effort on advancing legislation that would require Big Tech platforms to fairly compensate news publishers for use of their content.

Prior to her role at the News/Media Alliance, Coffey was Vice President and General Counsel for the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), where she led advocacy efforts on issues that affected the internet ecosystem, broadband deployment, content regulation and international trade. She was responsible for informing and educating government representatives about member companies’ technologies and advocated for policies that facilitate innovation.

Coffey said, “It will be an honor to lead this organization and this industry towards a strong and thriving future. I see tremendous opportunity for our expanded membership that now includes news publishers, magazines, and digital publications.  Our contributions to enriching society and democracy are limitless. I am deeply grateful to the Board of Directors for entrusting me to take on this role, and look forward to working with them, the Alliance team, and our affiliate organization the American Press Institute (API), to achieve many great things together.”

“Danielle’s passion for the news industry, and for local journalism in particular, coupled with her policy expertise have proven an enormous advantage for the News/Media Alliance’s advocacy efforts on behalf of our member organizations,” said Maribel Perez Wadsworth, News/Media Alliance board chair. “Additionally, Danielle’s deep knowledge of our members and industry will provide strong momentum around critical priorities, including a laser focus on passage of the Journalism Competition & Preservation Act.”

Coffey is a graduate of San Diego State University. She earned her JD from the Catholic University Law School, with a specialization in Communications Law. She serves on the board of directors of the National Press Club Journalism Institute (NPCJI).

Over the last several years, the News/Media Alliance has led critical advocacy efforts, research, communications and events on behalf of publishers of high-quality journalism, which is critical to a strong and informed society in which government officials are held to account. In addition to the Journalism Competition & Preservation Act (JCPA), the Alliance produces integral industry and audience research that helps news and magazine publishers identify and implement novel approaches to help grow revenue and subscriptions, including the recently released Magazine Media Factbook (previously a product of MPA – the Association of Magazine Publishers, which merged with the News Media Alliance last July) and research on news consumption preferences of Gen Z. In addition, the Alliance has developed multimedia resources for news and magazine publishers, including its News Take podcast, and works with various industry partners to provide tools and resources to help publishers navigate important public policy issues, including postal rates and First Amendment/journalist protection, copyright, privacy, and ad tech, among other issues.

Guest: Eric Barnes, The Daily Memphian

What are some of the things to consider when starting a local newspaper? How can you be nonprofit and still operate like a for-profit newspaper? How did you attract subscribers in a competitive market? What went better than you expected and what didn’t go as well? What have you learned about finding the best revenue mix? What should someone thinking about starting a local newspaper know before they get started?

In this episode of News Take, News/Media Alliance President & CEO David Chavern talks with Eric Barnes, CEO of The Daily Memphian (Tennessee), about his experience over the last four years launching a nonprofit local newspaper. Eric takes us from the very initial discussions and fundraising steps, to deciding whether to publish a print edition or be a purely a digital news publication, to how they decided what to charge for subscriptions and how they structure their organization to allow them to employ 40 newsroom staff (Hint: It’s not on pure philanthropy!) He shares everything, from how they took cues from the community to chart a practical course for advertising, fundraising, and reporting; to why they don’t do sponsored content and scaled back on podcasts; to how they found a balance that is working for them. This must-listen primer on launching a nonprofit digital news publication is full of practical tips and takeaways for anyone wanting to run a news publishing business!

Jim Klobuchar, father of Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), passed away yesterday at the age of 93. Jim was a longtime champion of our industry, working in journalism for four decades as a columnist for the Star Tribune in Minneapolis, Minn. In an article published Wednesday in the Star Tribune, Sen. Amy Klobuchar stated, “He loved our state. He loved journalism. He loved sports and adventure. And we loved him.”

The Star Tribune reported that Klobuchar wrote “an estimated 8,400 columns over 30 years.” Starting at the Star Tribune as a general columnist in 1965, he wrote about anything and everything, but first and foremost, about the town and the lives of its people. An avid chronicler and active community member, he was passionate about journalism and the local community he served. He genuinely cared about his fellow community members, and it showed in his work.

Alliance President and CEO, David Chavern, stated, “People like Jim Klobuchar are what make this industry so special. He is a shining example of how local journalism – provided by journalists who are members of the community themselves – is ingrained in our everyday lives. We are honored to count him as one of our own and we will continue to honor his legacy through promoting the importance of quality local journalism.”

The University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communication will be introducing a scholarship in honor of Klobuchar’s many contributions to the field. They are currently accepting donations in his memory.
